Read previewThe performance of hedge fund manager Harris Kupperman's Praetorian Capital Fund is proof that being pessimistic can pay off — even when the economy grows and stocks rise. Since launching at the start of 2019, Kupperman's fund is up an astounding 891.1% net of fees through March 31. AdvertisementBesides budget headaches, the hedge fund manager is wary of escalating political tensions at home and abroad. How to build a crisis-resistant portfolioThe hedge fund manager's blueprint for game plan scoring gains in a shaky backdrop with persistent inflation centers around commodities. A-Mark has consistently generated mid-single-digit earnings per share in recent years, though the hedge fund manager said that could easily rise to $10 as interest in precious metals rises.

How Not to Be a Selfish Gardener - The New York Times
  + stars: | 2024-05-02 | by ( Olivia Laing | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
The idea of the garden as a place of sinister seclusion has found its way to the world of high fashion. In Ballard’s characteristically bleak tale, a desperate mob advances on an elegant garden, where Count Axel and his wife live out a civilized, secluded existence. The selfish gardener of the 21st century creates idyllic vistas that rely on fertilizers and pesticides that poison the wider ecosystem or demand water in a time of drought. In her gripping memoir of the Second World War, “War in Val d’Orcia,” she describes a similar tide of desperate humanity approaching her garden gate. Unlike Ballard’s Count Axel, she didn’t seek to repel them, retiring to the library to dust her statues.

"The impact of the Baltimore port stoppage on construction and contractor supply chains may be significant," said William George, director of research for ImportGenius. There are a limited number of House districts truly at play in the 2024 elections – given many district lines are gerrymandered in a way to protect one party over the other. More Americans are moving to Tuscany, a part of Italy known for medieval walled cities and wine. Some locals say it's keeping their economy alive, but others are starting to grumble. The influx of Americans, locals said, can be at once a booster of fortunes and an irritating imposition. Prepare for volatility and chaos in 2024Kupperman's confidence in his hedge fund is inversely related to his outlook for the economy. "Recent geopolitical events, along with the collapse of bonds in many developed markets, seem likely to lead to an increase in overall market volatility," Kupperman wrote in his letter. If he's right about inflation, his hedge fund would be well-positioned to beat the market for a fifth consecutive year in 2024. "I do the same thing always, which is you buy cheap companies with really strong tailwinds and you hold 'em through the volatility," Kupperman said. For the last 18 months, Kupperman has been convinced that the future is in two commodities: oil and uranium.

Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger can look back and laugh now about their heated rivalry as they once sought to one-up each other in terms of box-office muscle. Give Arnold the edge when it comes to Netflix documentary memoirs, with his eponymous three-parter easily topping “Sly,” a too Stallone-centric rumination on his “Rocky” rise. Why you should be traveling to Europe in fall, not summer

And now it’s fall, when the continent really comes into its own as the leaves – and visitor numbers – start to drop. A recent report from luxury travel network Virtuoso named Paris, London and Florence as the most booked cities for fall travel. “Fall is one of the best times to visit Europe because of the vast variety of interests [the season] can cater to,” says Mina Agnos, president of luxury travel company Travelive. If you’re ready for a different take on Europe this fall, we’ve got ideas. Fall also means it’s harvest time in Rebland – an area southwest of Baden-Baden famous for its Riesling.

Some Parisians Unfazed by King Charles' Visit to France
  + stars: | 2023-09-19 | by ( Sept. | At A.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +2 min
By Noemie OlivePARIS (Reuters) - King Charles' state visit to France, from Wednesday to Friday, may be seen politically as a chance to rebuild ties between the two countries, but some Parisians said they were not impressed, and that they missed the late Queen Elizabeth. Charles, and his wife Queen Camilla, will be guests of honour at a state banquet in the gilded Versailles palace during the visit to France, Charles' first since becoming king a year ago. All this combined together doesn't create much interest," said Mireille, a retiree who liked Queen Elizabeth and her horses. Fifteen year-old Alexia Aubert said: "I think since Elizabeth died, the Royal family isn't as important as it was, King Charles isn't as important and symbolic as Elizabeth, so it doesn't really matter if he comes or not." In Britain, polls suggest Charles is less popular than his mother, who had strong support from much of the public.

Charles, a fluent French speaker like his mother, is keen to walk in her footsteps and is likely to refer to the late queen's deep affection for France during the visit, officials said. All this combined together doesn't create much interest," said the 88-year old, who liked Queen Elizabeth and her horses. As part of the visit, Charles and Camilla will drive down the Champs-Elysees and view restoration works at the Notre-Dame cathedral following a massive blaze in 2019 that destroyed its roof. The trip is also a chance to rebuild ties that have been frayed by Britain's chaotic exit from the EU in 2020. Renewed optimism about the economy calmed demand concerns while expectations of the largest oil production cuts since 2007 started to sap supply. Saudi Arabia and its OPEC allies refuse to boost oil production, much to the chagrin of the US. And so that's why I think it's just really, really interesting. Boosting uranium production takes years, he added, so it may take years to fix the shortage. Oil-adjacent stocks are the second-largest part of the Praetorian Capital Fund, Kupperman said.

Marlowe is, of course, the most famous creation of Raymond Chandler, perhaps the most famous of American crime novelists. On the one hand, there is his glorious writing, his blue-collar heroes and the occasional profound observations about the human experience. It takes a strong stomach to read a story in which a woman needs a slap to calm her down. Crime fiction was, and is, anti-feminist. Chandler may have been a misogynist, but he definitely lived in misogynist times, and his fiction reflects that.

Investors should prepare for fiscal, banking, and energy crises, a hedge fund manager warned. And thanks to a strong performance in July, the $254 million hedge fund has risen 16.8% after fees in 2023. Oil prices came under pressure when government reserves were released, but Kupperman said that's not a viable long-term recipe for reasonable energy prices. He expects a massive spike in oil prices in either 2024 or 2025, which will greatly benefit companies tied to the commodity. The investing opportunity Kupperman said he's most excited about is uranium, which he's playing through the Sprott Physical Uranium Trust.
